Saga Communications’ Charlottesville, Virginia radio cluster will
soon install a new Axia IP-Audio routing network and consoles. WINA-AM,
WVAX-AM, WCNR-FM, WQMZ-FM and WWWV-FM will be recipients of the new Axia
gear.
“Our experience at our first Axia build, in Asheville, North
Carolina, brought us back to them for the Charlottesville project,” says
Greg Urbiel, Director of Engineering for Saga. “Reduced wiring cost and
complexity, the presence of a unified control platform, both local and
remote, system efficiencies like the replacement of sound cards with
direct connections to the network, and our experience with the Axia team
during our first project — all these things led us to choose Axia
again.”
Existing consoles will be removed to make way for a new, integrated
routing network that encompasses 7 studios, each with Axia consoles and
mixing engines, and a TOC. Other equipment includes 19 Axia Audio Nodes
and PathfinderPC Routing Control software, which allows users to build
custom routing applications ranging from simple point-to-point routes to
multi-point scene changes.
More than 1,000 studios worldwide are now on-the-air with Axia
IP-Audio systems, which enable broadcasters to build audio routing
networks of any size using standard switched Ethernet. Axia networks
have a total system capacity of more than 10,000 audio streams, and can
carry hundreds of digital stereo channels over a single CAT-6 cable.
